Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel
The Viscous Coupling for the Cavalier/Calibra 4WD
General Description

Page 1

The Viscous coupling is a liquid based coupling, which is used to transmit drive to the rear wheels of the 4x4 vehicle. The coupling is driven by the front wheels and has the ability to deal with front and rear wheels turning at different speeds. It will automatically compensate to deliver optimum drive to the rear wheels.

1. Hub or Stator
2. External laminate plates (drive)
3. Internal laminate plates (driven)
4. Main housing

5. Prop shaft connection
A. (Centre) Input shaft from the txb planetary gearing
B. Forced flow of oil

One set of the laminate plates are toothed to the inside of the casing and the other set are toothed to the hub or Stator. By definition one set of plates are directly attached to the front wheels and the other to the rear wheels.

The Viscous coupling is filled with a specially prepared blend of silicon oils designed to deliver the correct maximium torque to the rear wheels. The unit should be considered as a sealed unit as it is almost impossible to reset a viscous coupling without access to the correct oils and at the correct level of blening.

It is the special characteristics of the blended oils which makes it possible for the coupling to transmit drive to the rear wheels.
